The found wreck is a 9 metre long riverboat, which is about 2000 years old! The vessel was first discovered 30 years ago, but it has only now been possible to examine it and determine what it really is.

The wreck with its cargo of bricks rests at a shallow depth of about 5 metres. According to the experts examining it, it probably dates back to the end of the 1st century. The whole thing is preserved in very good condition, thanks to the silt covering the bottom of the river.

“Firstly, we are keen to explore the location very well. According to our assumptions, the whole process should take about 2-3 years, if not longer. After this time, if we manage to collect enough material, we will want to make a partial reconstruction of the boat.” – Krunoslav Zubčić, archaeologist, reported on the research team’s activities.

This wreck is the second of its kind found in Croatia. There is a theory that in Roman times the Kupa River was an important route for floating heavy materials such as bricks and stone.
