A group of divers doing projects under the auspices of National Geographic experienced moments of terror when they were hit by a real underwater “avalanche” during a cave dive. The whole situation took place while exploring caves in the Bahamas and was captured on video.

Kenny Broad – an underwater anthropologist together with his research team is exploring a number of flooded caves in the Bahamas. During their work they have already conducted hundreds of cave dives, often in almost zero visibility. During one of them, they had the dubious good fortune to experience a very unusual phenomenon, which they also managed to record with a camera lens.

The film shows Broad swimming with the team through the narrow corridors of the cave, when all of a sudden, the moving sediments literally begin to cover the divers, momentarily reducing visibility to zero. Fortunately, thanks to proper training and a handrail, the dive ended happily and the divers were able to laugh when they emerged.

Underwater caves in the Bahamas are both beautiful and dangerous. Diving in them requires proper training and experience. Apart from tight passages, seriously hindering any manoeuvrability, their depth can drop to over 180 metres. Additionally, there is a tangle of tunnels running in all directions and creating a real maze. Visibility is also not very good and can often be only a few centimetres.

As Kenny Broad himself says, limited visibility is only one of the problems. The most important thing is to stay focused at all times and to follow the plan meticulously, step by step.

“A huge challenge is to not get distracted when you’re at the bottom. Not only do you have to be focused on where the handrail is, but you also have to keep an eye on your gas consumption, on changing gas cylinders properly, on whether you’re navigating properly, on whether you’re accidentally devastating the cave by snagging the surface. These are just some of the basic things you need to take care of with the utmost attention. Many great divers have ended their lives getting lost in a cave and never finding their way out as a result.” – recounts Broad

Kenny Broad and WesSkiles won the 2011 National Geographic Explorers of the Year award for their exploration and documentation of caves in the Bahamas.
