Governor Jerry Brown has officially passed a new state law that bans the shark fin trade. The state of California has thus become the largest economy in the world to throw off its profits based on the systematic extermination of sharks.

In his statement, the Governor expressed his belief that the practice of finning and discarding the mutilated animals in the water, is not only cruel, but also leads to the degradation of ocean life, and has driven some shark populations to the brink of extinction, reducing their numbers by up to 90%! In his own words:

“I signed this document, for future generations”.

California is leading the way, for other states and countries where shark fin is still a legal ‘delicacy’. Signals of shark conservation efforts are coming from more and more places. The move Jerry Brown has decided on will certainly help the common cause.
