It is suspected that the incidents on the Friars Islands are due to excessive human activity in the area. The ban, and the subsequent calm in the surrounding waters, should result in a return to normal behaviour by the underwater inhabitants.
There are many factors that can lead to abnormal behaviour in sharks. These include too many boats and divers, illegal fishing, and shark feeding time. By providing more calm, local authorities hope to restore the predators’ natural behaviour.
The sharks will be closely monitored in the coming period. The December rest period is also to be used to devise measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
