An underwater lake has been found in the Gulf of Mexico, according to seeker.com. This was done by Erik Cordes, a professor of biology at the American university Temple University, together with colleagues. This happened back in 2014, when an underwater Hercules remote-controlled robot stumbled upon the aforementioned body of water. The discovery was so amazing that the Nautilius expedition was organised a year later. Professor Erik Cordes decided to take a personal look at the phenomenon, take samples and relate it scientifically.

To do this, he descended to the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico using the crew ship Alvin. The descent took a little over an hour, and to his eyes appeared a sort of canyon full of white, red and black colours. Around the underwater lake lay many crab skeletons and few fish. He published his observations in the form of a report in the journal Oceanography, calling the discovered lake the “Jacuzzi of Despair”(Jacuzzi of Despair – ed.).

Why this juxtaposition of positive and negative expressions?

toxic lake

The underwater lake was found to be highly toxic. It contains various chemical compounds, including, in high concentrations, methane and hydrogen sulphide, both gases very dangerous for the environment and deadly for humans. It was also found that the “Jacuzzi of Despair” is very salty and warm. Its temperature is about 18°C. The Gulf of Mexico water surrounding the reservoir is about 4°C. As the scientists observed, it is this warmth that attracts various marine organisms, unaware of the danger. Most of them die, and only specially adapted polychaetes, shrimps and, of course, bacteria can survive.

Data:

  • diameter of the lake approx. 30 m
  • depth of lake more than 3.5 m
  • depth at which the lake lies 1005 m from the ocean surface
  • high density brine “toxic boiler”
  • does not mix with surrounding water
