An unusual post has appeared on the social networking site Twitter in recent days. The author, Jacob Levenson, posted a photo of a stranded ROV asking for help in finding its owner. The situation is quite unusual, as machines of this type are not a pair of keys that could go astray.

Remotely Operated Vehicles, or ROVs for short, are remotely operated vehicles used to explore ocean depths inaccessible to divers. The machines are used in almost all types of underwater activities, from archaeology, treasure hunting, maintenance work and inspections on oil rigs, to rescue services and the military.

A vehicle the size of a car was found on the beach at Hol Chan Marine Reserve and immediately became a sensation across the diving internet. After all, it is not every day that a device measuring more than 3.5 metres long, 2 metres wide and 2.1 metres high is found on a beach, and its value is calculated in millions of dollars.

The ROV has been identified as the Quantum XP ROV model, which is very commonly used by companies operating in the oil industry. It is very distinctive because of its unusual white colour. Most machines in this series are produced in yellow, red or orange.

The search for the owner is still ongoing and it is probably only a matter of time before the company that lost the ROV is found. Surely someone will be very surprised to learn that their expensive doom, is waiting to be picked up in Belize.
