Avatar 2 – James Cameron will take viewers underwater

No one needs to be convinced that James Cameron is in love with the depths of the seas and oceans. No wonder that in his latest work, Avatar 2, the director decided to show the audience some underwater scenes. Although a little is probably an understatement, since 68-year-old Sigourney Weaver has already taken a diving course and is in the process of freediving!

What actor can’t do for art? Hollywood legend Sigourney Weaver also took on a number of challenges for her role in the next Avatar instalment. As well as completing a scuba diving course, Weaver has also honed her breath-hold diving skills and, she assures us, at this point her score is already an impressive 4 minutes.

[blockquote style=”2″]”I am already a certified diver and in freediving training. After completing the diving course, Jim said to me – 75% of the world underwater is now part of who you will become. We’re going to have some pretty long shots underwater where we’re not using dive gear,” Weaver says.[/blockquote]

This isn’t the first time the star has had to deal with challenging underwater scenes. Fans of the “Alien” series, surely remember the shots from the 1997 film “Alien – Resurrection”. At the time, the film industry media paid a lot of attention to Winona Ryder’s problems with them, in which having to stay underwater for long periods of time while holding her breath was almost panic-inducing.

[blockquote style=”2″]”To be honest, I haven’t had this much fun in a long time. There’s a whole sport dedicated to breath-hold diving. How to train, how to prepare and how to improve your results.” – explained Weaver during the interview[/blockquote].

The new Avatar is also expected to bring pioneering methods when it comes to the technique of recording scenes in water called underwater motion-capture.

[blockquote style=”2″]”Before us, nobody had ever done it. With motion capture it’s a difficult task because this optical system relies on markers that are photographed by hundreds of cameramen. Shooting underwater is not a challenge, but already the surface of the water acts as a moving mirror, reflecting all the markers and creating copies of them. It’s a bit like dropping objects from a fighter jet to confuse the sensors of a missile. Water creates thousands of false markers, so we had to figure out a way to remedy that. And we succeeded. In short, if you add water somewhere, the problem becomes ten times harder to solve. We put a lot of work, innovation, imagination and new technology into it, and it took us a year and a half.” – assured James Cameron[/blockquote].
