The beginning of the week was successfully inaugurated by archaeologists. On Monday, they finished excavating a 1000-year-old hollow vessel made by craftsmen connected with the court of our legendary ruler Mieszko I from the bottom of Lednickie Lake. At least such information about the find was provided by Dr Krzysztof Radka from the Nicolaus Copernicus University.

The excavated find is almost 11 metres long and was made from a single tree trunk, specifically a lime tree. Unfortunately, the distance the lime tree has travelled from the moment it sank to the present day meant that it had to be excavated in several pieces. Both the influence of water and many other factors led to the formation of many cracks, which made it impossible to lift it in one piece.

Interestingly, the boat, made from a single log and resting at a depth of around 10 metres, has been known about for a long time, but only now has it been decided to do something more about it.

“We located it already in the 1990s, and as a result of cooperation between the Museum of the First Piasts in Lednica and the Museum of Polish History in Warsaw, a decision was made to excavate and conserve it,” – Dr Andrzej Pydyn, head of the underwater archaeology department at the Nicolaus Copernicus University, told PAP.

The whole process of lifting and excavating the dugout canoe had been going on since October. All because of the condition of the object, the whole process was extremely long and complicated. The boat was transported to Toruń, where it will undergo a conservation process. After its completion, it will be included on the list of exhibits Museum of First Piasts in Lednica and will be immediately handed over to a long-term deposit for exhibition in The Museum of Polish History in Warsaw.
