In the article “Virtual diving at your fingertips“, which appeared on our pages on 24 February 2012, we informed that soon all we need is a device connected to the Internet to see the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Today, we have more information about this interesting project.

The venture behind the Catlin Survey Seaview takes us on a digital journey to the world’s greatest reef. Thanks to the enormous amount of work that has been done, we can admire the Great Barrier Reef on 15,000 (with a target of 50,000!) panoramic images. (the target is 50,000!) panoramic pictures. All images are recorded with special cameras, located on a diving scooter.

The cameras capture images that are later combined in the editing stage into a high-resolution whole, showing the reefs in a 360° view.

The whole project is made possible through the sponsorship of the insurance company Catlin. It aims to raise environmental awareness among people. As the authors themselves admit, the current decade is one of the most critical for the life of coral reefs, so the fight for their protection should be supported in every way possible.

The material collected so far, has been collected on the “top” part of the reef, located at a level of 30-100m. From the very beginning, when the photo-taking began, subsequent sessions brought real surprises, such as the discovery of new species living on the Great Reef.
