Last Saturday, 27 August, a unique event took place. On the popular Koparki reservoir, a wedding ceremony took place, conducted underwater of course. The wedding was combined with breaking the Guinness record in the number of guests accompanying such an event.

Father Pawel Sparrow, who led the service, explained that in the eyes of the church this was not a real wedding, but only a blessing. Instead, the customary ceremony in the church took place beforehand.

There were 303 divers gathered underwater, at a depth of 5m, but the committee only recognised 273, which was still enough to improve the record by 12 people. The wedding was transmitted by ROV to the surface and displayed on a video screen.

“A shop steward and a notary were present during the record-breaking, and we will submit the results to the Guinness Centre. So far, the first place in the world ranking was held by Italians, who got married underwater in the presence of 261 witnesses. We showed that Poles are not geese… – they have their divers!” – Miroslaw Kierepka, head of the Digger Diving Centre, said.

The bride and groom “read” the words of their vows by sliding their fingers over the lines of a laminated sheet of paper with the text printed on it. The sacramental ‘yes’, as befits divers, was replaced by the diving sign ‘everything ok’. There was also a kiss, for which they had to get rid of their breathing apparatuses for a while. It is also worth mentioning, that the newlyweds, had specially prepared for this occasion wedding-diving suits.
