An impending volcanic eruption will change Bali’s diving landscape? – video

The whole world is waiting for the eruption of the Gunung Agung volcano in Bali. More than 50 000 people have already been evacuated. During the previous eruption, tectonic tremors led to the sinking of the Liberty vessel, which is now lying on the seabed near the volcano.

USAT “Liberty” was a US Navy cargo ship that ran aground near Bali in 1942. Tectonic tremors accompanying the eruption of a volcano in the 1960s caused the vessel to slide down a sandy slope to a depth of about 30 metres. This created a fantastic artificial reef, situated on huge black volcanic boulders.

I will remember this dive till the end of my life. I hope that the “Mountain of Gods” Bali, in the event of the expected eruption, will not bring casualties, destruction of the island and will not bury the wreck of the vessel “Liberty”. While waiting for the eruption, I re-edited old video footage. Adam Malec talks about the volcano.

Gunung Agung is an active stratovolcano located in Indonesia and is the highest peak on the beautiful island of Bali – 3,142 metres above sea level. The crater of the volcano has a diameter of 500 metres and is almost 200 metres deep.

Historical sources inform that the first recorded eruption of Gunung Agung took place in the early 19th century, in 1808. The last eruption was in the mid 1960s. The last eruption killed about 12 000 people!

It was during the 1963 eruption that one of the best dive sites in Bali was created.
