Each of us has their own favourite type of diving. Some prefer wreck diving and obsessively attack sea waters, penetrating property seized by the waves, others like to venture into inaccessible corridors of caves and adits, which are just waiting to be explored. Still others love the colourful life of the reefs, the shallow depths and the variety of fauna encountered. No matter which description applies to you, we all encounter underwater places that arouse our undying admiration, and such is a lake in Austria.
This wonderful place is located in the northern Alps, in the Hochschwab mountain range, situated in Styria. For most of the year, the place is completely dry and is part of a national park that is popular with hikers. However, when the sun starts to heat up and the snows covering the mountain slopes start to melt, the area fills with water, creating a unique reservoir.
Green Lake, or Gruner See, is a basin in whose emerald waters, not exceeding 10m depth, hides one of the most spectacular diving sites. The beautiful picture that is drawn before our eyes is the effect of the contrast created by the juxtaposition of two worlds and their environments – the underwater world with water and fish, and the land world with its beautiful flora and landscape elements. This amazing combination is made possible by the fact that the place where the reservoir is located is completely dry for half the year, only to fill up with water by the end of July with the spring melt.
The crystal clear waters, take on an emerald green colour, thanks to the vegetation covering the bottom of the periodic basin. In June, the lake becomes a mecca for tourists who, having heard about the uniqueness of this place, decide to experience its magic.
Polish divers also often choose the “Green Lake” as their destination. If you like it and would like to give it a dive, maybe it is worth to spread this topic among your friends or in a friendly diving centre? An organised group trip to the Austrian Alps should not be too expensive, and will certainly be an unforgettable experience!
