A year ago, on 11 November 2016, an extraordinary meeting with freediving legend Umberto Pelizzari took place in Poznań. After the meeting, our colleague Agnieszka Kalska, conducted an interview with the multiple world record holder in free diving.

Below you will find a transcript of it, from which you will learn, among other things, what the foundation of freediving is, why it is worth practising it also in the pool and what the Italian master’s recipe is for holding your breath for more than 8 minutes.

Umberto Pelizzari was the first person in the history of freediving to dive to a depth of 150 metres in one breath. He was a student of Jacques Mayol himself and between 1990 and 2001 he set 16 world records in the following disciplines: constant weight (CWT), variable weight (VWT), “no limits” (NLT) (NLT).

In 1995, together with Renzo Mazzari, they founded the Apnea Academy freediving school, which from the beginning was dedicated exclusively to freediving and today has over 400 instructors worldwide. In this interview, he talks about what is a priority in the system of the “apnea” school he founded.

A photo-report from the meeting in Poznań is available at organiser’s website events of the freediving and swimming school Freebody.
