Local media report that in Piła, on the very popular among divers lake Płotki, an unusual project is being created! Floating platform for disabled divers, providing completely safe entry and exit from water, is to be the first of its kind in the world. The whole undertaking is an idea of the association Step by Step HSA.

The creators and their activities are guided by one goal – the rehabilitation of disabled people through diving. After all, anyone who has come into contact with our beloved sport can testify to its beneficial effects on people’s body and spirit.

[blockquote style=”2″]This platform will enable completely safe diving in the lake for people with disabilities. Thanks to this, people who we “infect” with diving at the swimming pool will have a chance to dive in the lake and see the underwater world,” Grzegorz Marciniak, a diving instructor from the Step by Step HSA association, told the Życie Piła portal.[/blockquote]

For fully fit and healthy people, diving can be like gliding through the air or a kind of suspension of space and breaking the laws of gravity. It helps to relax and recharge with positive energy. Now imagine what a great experience it is for people with everyday disabilities, who, at least for a moment, can break through their limitations and forget about the barriers on the surface.

[blockquote style=”2″]The fact that someone can get to such a platform independently is also of great importance. Besides, on the platform itself there will be a special diving hole, with a movable bottom which will also improve the comfort and feeling of safety for divers. There will also be a “lift” on a rail, with special braces. This will enable safe diving for people with disabilities, adds Grzegorz Marciniak.[/blockquote]

Diving as a form of rehabilitation is nothing new nowadays and the subject is widely known all over the world. Therefore, the fact that another step in popularisation and facilitation of access to the underwater world for disabled persons is made in Poland should be all the more satisfying. We can only hope that it will be a stone which, if not an avalanche, then at least a few more, which will result in opening the most popular diving sites to people with disabilities.

[blockquote style=”2″]In this case we can recall the saying that the need is the mother of invention. Having visited various corners of the world and various diving bases many times, knowing how to solve certain issues logistically, we know what we expect and what we need,” association president and HSA instructor Krzysztof Trawiński told Życie Piła. – This solution, above all, makes it easier for us to organise classes. For people in wheelchairs, the base is even 20 metres away from the water, in addition with the sandy area on the way, it is already a big barrier. This additional platform with a movable bottom, whose immersion will be adjustable, depending on the degree of disability and advancement in diving of a person going under water, will also be a huge change – adds Krzysztof Trawiński.[/blockquote]

The facility has already entered the construction phase and is no longer just a virtual project. The platform, connected to the shore by two piers, will be located next to the equipment rental. Preparations are currently underway to prepare the floating part for construction. If nothing stands in the way, the facility will be put into service later this summer.
