In just a week we will start celebrating Christmas. On this occasion, also in the diving part of the internet, more and more information in a festive mood is appearing. We have underwater Christmas trees, Christmas promotions and many suggestions for a diving gift, and also… divers dressed up as Santa Claus. Just following the latter, in the English Vobster Quay, every year costumed divers gather, who support with their presence a charity action, led by the local diving community.

As every year, the aim of the whole event was to raise money to support the Royal National Lifeboat Institution – RNLI, which is dedicated to saving people at sea. This is a service that is extremely well respected and close to the hearts of all UK divers, so it’s no surprise that the whole UK diving world is getting involved.

In the process, another equally prestigious goal was achieved. The Vobster Quay divers set a new world record for the number of Father Christmases in the water at the same time.

This year it was 188 people who came down from all over the British Isles on 13 December and broke the record set in 2013 when a total of 175 people entered the water. The bar was raised by just 8 people, but both results are quite impressive.

The first ‘Santa’ dive took place in 2007. And since then the RNLI account has been credited with over £30,000! This year, as well as supporting the RNLI, money was also raised for a rescue helicopter for the Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance.

There will be a prize draw for those taking part in the whole charity event, with diving equipment donated by, amongst others: Apeks/Aqualung, Fourth Element, Otter Drysuits, KUBI UK, Sea&Sea, Hollis UK or Light-For-Me.

The weather was also good to everyone who turned up that day to support a good cause and have a good time. Combined with what was achieved, everyone has a right to be very pleased. However, there was a small problem… what will it take now to beat such a good result next year?
