A diver has gone missing while diving on one of the most famous wrecks – the SS liner “Andrea Doria”. According to CNN, the 64-year-old man went missing last Wednesday. So far, the search has been unsuccessful and the man has been declared dead and his next of kin informed.
The 64-year-old was reported missing by another man with whom they were diving together. According to his description of the situation, they lost sight of each other underwater and he returned to the surface alone. The notified coastguard searched an area of 350 Mm² within 30h of the disappearance. Due to lack of results the search was called off.
“This is always a difficult decision. For everyone in the Coast Guard, the priority is to save lives and help those who need that help. That is why we do this service. It’s always very disheartening when we can’t accomplish that goal.” – said Marcus Gherardi, spokesman for Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England.
The US Coast Guard is warning against diving on this wreck. Even very experienced divers can encounter serious problems when diving on the Doria. In the past decade alone, 7 people have lost their lives on this wreck.
Since its sinking in the waters near Nantucket in 1956, the wreck of the “Andrea Doria” has been the site of many diving expeditions. Due to its size – over 213 m long and its location – 70 m below the water surface, it is considered extremely difficult to explore, but at the same time it is a challenge that many technical divers decide to take on.
