An interesting fact for fans of technological innovations and wreck diving. A computer animation in the form of a 3D hologram has been created, showing the wreck of the British ship HMS Royal Oak.
After being hit by 4 torpedoes, the ship sank in Scottish waters, adding to the list of wrecks in the real Mecca for wreck divers – Scapa Flow. In addition to the current state of the Royal Oak, the hologram shows its immediate surroundings. The whole project was developed at the University of Edinburgh.
The Revenge class battleship, serving in the Royal Navy, was the first to be sunk as a result of warfare during World War II. Exactly on 14 October 1939, the Kriegsmarine submarine U-47, sank an enemy battleship along with 833 crew members.
The material used to create the hologram was taken with sonar in 2006 by the Archaeological Diving Unit Survey (ADUS). The scientists responsible for creating the holograms were then contacted to ask if it was possible to create an animation based on the data collected. The result is shown below.
