Guadalajara, in the state of Michoacan, and its surroundings, have been known for a long time as a particularly dangerous place under the control of local gangs involved in drug trafficking.
The shark carcasses were gutted and, of course, stripped of their most valuable feature, the fins. However, according to the Mexican Environmental Protection Agency, the animals were probably legally caught in the north of the country, in the states of Sonora and Sinaloa.
Police suspect that a truck heading to the national capital was attacked and hijacked by bandits and then left with unnecessary carcasses.
The sharks found are allopias(thresher sharks), which are not protected in Mexico. They are characterised by an exceptionally long and slender tail fin.
