14-year-old from Egypt breaks Guinness record

A new Guinness record for the longest dive in sea water will become a reality if the dive of a teenage girl from Egypt, is recognised by a verification committee. The problem is the girl’s age, as she is only 14, which is below the minimum allowed in such situations.

Young Reem Ashraf Fawzi, according to media reports, conducted a dive lasting 55 hours, breaking the existing record by nearly 4 hours. The attempt took place in the Red Sea, near Sharm el-Sheikh, in the waters of the Gulf of Aqaba.

The previous record was held by 38-year-old American Christi Quill, who spent 51 hours and 25 minutes underwater. She conducted her dive in 2016, in California. The record in the men’s category is slightly more lofty at 142h.

Local media led by Al-Arabiya reported that Fawzi had been preparing for the record attempt for 2 years. Training included operating on a diet of liquids and sleeping for short periods of time while diving. According to the teenager herself, she was encouraged to dive by her father, who is an Egitpu naval officer.

It is important to note that Guinness World Records representatives have decided to consider making the record official, despite Reem Ashraf Fawzi not yet reaching the required age.
